Free Hootsuite alternatives
Hootsuite ended its free plan in 2023. Today you get a 14-day trial and then a paid plan. If you need something free, there are two routes: a hosted tool with a free plan, or open-source software you run yourself. Both are below, along with the cases where Hootsuite is still worth paying for.
What does Hootsuite do well?
Hootsuite is built for teams that run a lot of social at once. Scheduling sits next to a shared inbox, social listening, ads and enterprise governance, across Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, WhatsApp and Pinterest.
It also has official MCP servers, so an AI agent can draft and schedule posts, work the inbox or query listening data through your Hootsuite account. Content approvals come with the Advanced and Enterprise plans.
What are the free options?
Free can mean two quite different things here.
Hosted free plans are the quick route. Buffer's free plan connects three channels. Metricool's covers one brand and a monthly post allowance, though it leaves out LinkedIn and X. You sign up, connect, post, and the vendor runs everything.
Open-source tools cost nothing to run. pendpost, Postiz and Mixpost Lite all fall in this group. You install them and connect your own platform credentials, and your data stays with you. What you pay is setup time.
Which Hootsuite alternatives are worth a look?
pendpost
You want an AI agent to draft and schedule while a person approves each post. Free and MIT-licensed, with a comment inbox, Radar listening, client review links and a multi-brand workspace in the core.
Trade-off: It runs on your machine or your own server, and you bring API credentials for each platform. No team seats or ads tools.
Buffer
The simplest free hosted option for a few channels, with an AI assistant and an MCP server.
Trade-off: Three channels on the free plan; approvals need the Team plan.
Metricool
A free hosted plan with strong analytics and competitor tracking, plus an MCP server on every plan.
Trade-off: One brand, and no LinkedIn or X on the free plan.
Postiz
A free, self-hosted dashboard across 30+ channels. Postiz Cloud exists if you would rather not host it.
Trade-off: AGPL-3.0, and you run a server app. We found no built-in approve step.
Mixpost
A self-hosted team dashboard. The Lite edition is free.
Trade-off: Lite covers Facebook Pages, X and Mastodon; the rest of the networks and approvals need Pro.
How does pendpost compare to Hootsuite?
| Hootsuite | pendpost | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Hootsuite's cloud | Your machine (binds 127.0.0.1) or your own server |
| License | Proprietary | MIT, open source |
| Free option | 14-day trial | The whole engine; the paid cloud only sells uptime |
| AI agent access | Official MCP servers | MCP server on your machine; an agent can never approve its own post |
| Approval before publishing | Advanced and Enterprise plans | On by default, in the free core |
| Inbox and listening | Shared team inbox, listening, ads | Comment inbox with moderation; Radar listening on Reddit, Hacker News, Bluesky and Mastodon |
| Built for | Teams, up to enterprise | Solo operators and small agencies running several brands |
For a big team, Hootsuite simply does more: seats, roles, a shared inbox, ads. pendpost covers the part where an agent drafts and a person approves, and that part costs nothing.
Which one should you pick?
- Keep Hootsuite if a large team uses its inbox, listening and governance features every day.
- Pick Buffer's free plan if you post to a few channels and want nothing to install.
- Pick Metricool's free plan if analytics come first.
- Pick pendpost if you want an agent to draft, a person to approve, and the whole thing free on your own machine.
- Pick Postiz or Mixpost for a free self-hosted dashboard.
